Lecture "Missoula Floods, Glaciers, and Early People and Explorers in Northeast Washington"

A free public lecture, "Missoula Floods, Glaciers, and Early People and Explorers in Northeast Washington" by Gene Kiver and Jack Nisbet is scheduled for Friday, May 4, 7-9 p.m. at Spokane Community College, Lair Auditorium in Student Service Building #6. This event is co-sponsored by the Department of Science, Spokane Community College and the Ice Age Floods Institute, Cheney-Spokane Chapter. Ice Age glaciers in the Purcell Trench of northern Idaho formed a huge ice-dammed lake numerous times in northern Idaho and northwestern Montano called Glacial Lake Missoula. The catastrophic failure of the ice dam sent immense volumes of water flooding across the eastern Washington landscape. The changing position of the glaciers determined whether the Missoula Floods went only down the Rathdrum Prairie or spilled westward as well into the Pend Oreille and Little Pend Oreille River valleys. The glaciers, Missoula Floods, and river systems opened up natural pathways that were used for millenia by Native Americans and later the early explorers and settlers. Humans adjusted well and met the challenges presented by the unique geological processes that formed the rugged environment of the Pacific Northwest. The May 5 field trip will take registrants to these areas and Bruce Bjornstad will join Kiver and Nisbet as leaders. FIELD TRIP - Missoula Floods, Glaciers, and Early People and Explorers in Northeast Washington

7:30 a.m. - 6 p.m. Buses will begin loading at 7:30 a.m.

DESCRIPTION OF FIELD TRIP: This is an all day field excursion by deluxe bus to the Pend Oreille Valley and Kalispell Indian Reservation and is led by Gene Kiver, Jack Nisbet and Bruce Bjornstad. The Missoula Floods, Pleistocene glaciers, and early explorer history will be the main topics of discussions. Hike - Steamboat Rock near Grand Coulee

This is a challenging hike because of the steep access trail and exposure to vertical cliffs along the plateau edge. A 5.5 mile roundtrip to one of the more spectacular flood features in the Channeled Scabland. The access route involves 720-feet elevation change requiring a scramble on loose rock. The descent in particular should be carefully negotiated. The summit is relatively flat and has a primitive trail around its periphery. This is a Goat Rock landform left by the cataract retreat that formed the Grand Coulee. A major stratigraphic break called an unconformity, glacial erratics, glacial till, flood bars, hanging valleys and many other geologic features will be observed from this high perch above the floor of the Grand Coulee. Hikers will meet at the picnic ground and boat launch area at Steamboat Rock State Park at 9:30 a.m. sharp. Registration form, FEE, and more detailed information is attached to this screen.

Hike – Umatilla Rock near Grand Coulee

This hike by Dry Falls is less strenuous than the Steamboat Rock hike and is relatively flat except for one short section to a viewpoint. Umatilla Rock loop trail in Sun Lakes State Park is located near the head of the Lower Grand Coulee, about 4-miles roundtrip on relatively easy trail except for a short side hike to the Umatilla Rock saddle. Umatilla is a rock blade left as the twin cataracts that retreated headward to form Dry Falls. Views of the Columbia River Basalt, plunge-pool basins, pendant flood bars, huge basalt pinnacles and the massive headwall and sidewalls of the Dry Falls cataract and cataract canyons that loom above. This is Trail DD in On The Trail of the Ice Age Floods: The Northern Reaches (Keokee Press). Hikers will meet at the Umatilla Rock trailhead in Sun Lakes State Park at 9:30 a.m. sharp. Flowers, Floods, and Feathers – Turnbull Spring Nature Festival

Enjoy spring by experiencing and learning about the exceptional wildlife, habitats, and geology of the unique Channeled Scablands landscape.

On May 19th from 8 am to 3 pm Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge, in partnership with numerous organizations/agencies, is offering a free Spring nature festival with activities for families and individuals of all ages.

Take a walk on the wild side and discover birds, wildflowers, insects, other wildlife, and catch a glimpse of remnants of the ice age floods that created the diverse Scablands habitat. Nature hikes, tours, kids activities, and informational booths provided by a number of organizations will make for a wonderful spring day outdoors in this remarkable environment.
